Our Approach

At Belford Primary School, we believe that children learn best when learning is purposeful, engaging and rooted in memorable experiences. Our curriculum builds progressively on pupils’ prior knowledge and experiences, enabling them to make meaningful connections and apply their learning to real-life contexts. Oracy is central to our approach: children are given regular opportunities to talk, listen, question, explain, rehearse ideas and use subject-specific vocabulary, recognising that high-quality spoken language supports both learning and writing. Through explicit teaching, purposeful talk, reading, writing, practical experiences and opportunities to investigate and create, pupils develop the knowledge, vocabulary, skills and confidence to communicate effectively and make sense of the world around them. Learning is extended beyond the classroom through visits, visitors, our school grounds and the local community, providing authentic contexts in which children can apply, evaluate and share their learning.
