The National Curriculum
The National Curriculum provides the statutory framework for our curriculum in Key Stages 1 and 2. At Belford Primary School, we use it as the foundation for a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that is inclusive, progressive, purposeful and responsive to individual needs. We build on prior learning and provide opportunities for children to apply their knowledge and skills in meaningful, real-life contexts.
EYFS
Children in Nursery and Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which consists of seven areas of learning:
Prime Areas: Communication and Language; Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Physical Development.
Specific Areas: Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; Expressive Arts and Design.
We recognise that communication and language underpin learning across the curriculum. Children are given rich opportunities to talk, listen, question and develop their vocabulary.
Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2
Children in Years 1–6 follow the National Curriculum programmes of study in English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Art and Design, Music and Physical Education. At Key Stage 2, pupils also study a foreign language, with French taught at Belford Primary School. The school also provides Religious Education and other statutory aspects of the wider curriculum.
Oracy is integral to our curriculum. Children are encouraged to discuss ideas, ask questions, explain their thinking, use subject-specific vocabulary, listen to others and rehearse ideas orally before writing. This supports their development as confident communicators and successful writers.
We believe that education extends beyond the acquisition of knowledge. Our curriculum develops the knowledge, skills, vocabulary, confidence and resilience children need to apply their learning, think critically, communicate effectively and participate positively in an ever-changing world. Through practical experiences, educational visits, visitors and opportunities within our school and local community, we aim to make learning meaningful, memorable and purposeful.
We share and celebrate children's learning with families through newsletters, the school website, social media, assemblies, performances and opportunities to engage with school life.
