Cooking and gardening

At Belford Primary School we strongly believe that children should be given opportunities to apply their learning to real life situations. Our school garden and newly installed kitchen are perfect for enhancing our learning in all curriculum areas.

Children help maintain the plants and grounds in the school garden, as well as having a say as what gets planted. Children enjoy applying their knowledge of measuring and finding out about the seasonality of plants as well as conditions for growth.

Each year the children harvest their produce and parents are invited in to cook with it after our Harvest festival assembly.

Cooking sessions are planned into the curriculum to support learning and to develop new skills. Children gain confidence and deepen their understanding of healthy choices and nutrition.

Health and Safety is taken seriously and children are actively taught how to be safe when using gardening equipment and about hygiene and safety in the kitchen.
